Basic HO Slot Car What follows is a brief list of some very basic questions a newbie might have when entering this hobby. These are questions that I had and had to search for the answers to. If you have any other questions, feel free to submit them to me, or if I have an answer wrong, please let me know. Q: Who currently manufacturers HO slot cars? A: The "Big Three" are currently Tomy (who bought Aurora/AFX), Tyco (who was bought by Mattel and has become HotWheels Electric Racing) and LifeLike. There are also many smaller and specialized manufacturers.
Q: Will all cars run on all tracks? A: Generally speaking, yes. Any car made by Aurora, Tomy, Tyco, or LifeLike will run on any of the other companies' track. But there are some exceptions as there have been products produced by various other companies over the years that were not compatible with any other system. Except or these few examples, everything is pretty much compatible.
Q: Can I combine brands of track? A: Yes, but you'll need an adaptor. There are commercial adaptors available or you can make one yourself.
Q: What are T-Jets? A: T-Jets (short for "Thunder Jets") were the cars produced by Aurora throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. They were (and still are) very popular because they were easily modified and had a very wide selection of body styles and paint schemes. Besides nostalgia, what sets them apart from modern slot cars is the "pancake" type motor and their lack of traction magnets. These were replaced by the AFX (Aurora Factory Experimentals) series in 1972. |
